[Introduction to Medicine –醫學入門, Yixuerumen]

What is Moxibustion?

Moxibustion(moxa) is an ancient form of Aromatherapy used in Chinese medicine for thousands of years to enhance circulation, by using the ground up leaves of the plant Mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris).

In the Research, Classical Moxibustion treatment is a modality that  the powdery substance is made into tiny cones and put it on acupuncture points of your skin and cauterizes it slightly at about 122°F -140°F (50°C-60°C).

This stimulates acupuncture points and activates special materials generated (called Histotoxin in a study by Dr. Oosawa of Japan) from your body. Originally, moxibustion obtained medical effects are not simply by stimulation through body cells but natural treatment mechanism by a protein generated by the heat from burning skin.

Everyone can apply moxibustion easily as in the past in Eastern Asia, it was commonly used as a home treatment. Nowadays, some people shun moxibustion as it leaves a moxa cauterization scar. So, indirect treatments are being used in a variety of ways.

Acupuncture and moxibustion should be used for curing diseases and pain – not for beauty. However, indirect moxibustion may be used if necessary.

Needless to say, the more effective direct treatments are best suited to alleviate illnesses. The treatment’s main purpose is disease recovery. Those who resist treatments due to the scarring are not really of illness and shouldn’t bother with the treatment at all.

It is difficult to comprehend someone’s desire to merely accept suffering or pain for the sake of avoiding scars. Those who really suffer from pain often say, “Scars and marks don’t matter. It’s not a big deal compared to them.
